Courteney Cox is keeping the memory of her dear friend and former co-star Matthew Perry alive through a spiritual connection. In a recent interview, the Friends actress opened up about sensing Perry’s presence even after his tragic passing last year at age 54. “He visits me a lot, if we believe in that,” Cox shared.
The 59-year-old reflected on her decadeslong friendship with Perry, who she starred alongside on the iconic sitcom for 10 seasons from 1994-2004. “He’s just so funny. He is genuinely, a huge heart. Obviously struggled,” Cox said fondly. “I’m so thankful I got to work so closely with him for so many years.”
Their bond transcended just their time on set together. Cox revealed she communicates with the spirits of several loved ones who have passed away, including her parents as well as Perry. “I talk to my mom, my dad, Matthew. I feel like there are a lot of people that are — I think that guide us. I do sense, yeah, I sense Matthew’s around for sure.”
After Perry’s death in October 2023, Cox paid heartfelt tribute on social media. She expressed gratitude for their friendship and mourned his tragic loss. Accompanying a iconic clip from Friends showcasing the comedic chemistry between their characters Monica and Chandler, Cox wrote: “I am so grateful for every moment I had with you Matty and I miss you every day.” She explained the backstory of the scene, saying “Chandler and Monica were supposed to have a one night fling in London. But because of the audience’s reaction, it became the beginning of their love story.” Cox fondly recalled how Perry would whisper funny lines to her before filming. “He was funny and he was kind.”
The remaining cast members of the beloved sitcom all shared their devastation over Perry’s passing. Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer joined Cox in a statement saying: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family.” They gathered together for a private memorial service to honor their longtime friend.
Perry’s death at age 54 in his Los Angeles home was ruled due to “acute effects of ketamine” by the medical examiner. The actor had long struggled with addiction issues over the years. While he is deeply missed by his former co-stars, Cox feels Perry’s spirit lives on and stays connected to her. Maintaining her spiritual bond with the late star provides comfort as she continues mourning his tragic loss.
For Cox, keeping Perry’s memory alive transcends just looking back on their time working together. She has forged an everlasting connection that allows her to sense his presence and find solace in still feeling his impact, despite his physical absence. The two actors, who brought to life one of television’s most iconic couples, shared a bond that extended far beyond the camera. And even in death, their decades-spanning friendship endures through Cox sensing Perry’s spirit surrounding her.
