£7,000 Bid for Trump’s Rare Sneakers

In a surprising twist of events, former President Donald J. Trump took the stage at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia, promoting his limited edition “Never Surrender High Top” sneakers, which, despite being officially not affiliated with Trump, have already sold out, retailing for just over £300.

The gold-painted leather sneakers, featuring an American flag on the heel, drew mixed reactions at the event. Trump expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is something I’ve been talking about for 12 years, 13 years, and I think it’s going to be a big success.” However, the response to the release has been divisive. Critics questioned Sneaker Con’s decision to provide a platform for Trump, while others mocked the idea of a political leader engaging in sneaker promotion.

Amid the controversy, a Joe Biden campaign spokesman ridiculed the sneakers as “bootleg Off-Whites,” humorously noting that they are “the closest he’ll get to any Air Force One ever again for the rest of his life.” This remark cleverly played on Trump’s election prospects for 2024.

Sneaker Con addressed the controversy on social media, emphasizing their mission to support and promote sneaker culture. Despite the critique, the “Never Surrender” high-tops have become sought-after collector’s items, with pairs listed on eBay for six figures. Notably, some fortunate individuals, like a luxury watch dealer who paid £7,000, managed to secure hand-signed pairs at Sneaker Con.

The sneaker offerings extend beyond the high-tops, featuring two low-top options – the “T-Red Wave” and the “POTUS 45.” These come with a sock-like fabric upper in white and red. However, as of now, only a handful of collectors possess these shoes, as they are made to order and are set to be manufactured and shipped out in July. Trump’s website highlights the quality of the products, labeling them as a testament to the 45th President.

Despite the limited release and the fact that the sneakers seem more like novelty items than a serious foray into the sneaker market, Trump’s website encourages visitors to “Join Trump’s Sneaker Community” and “Be a Part of History.” However, the likelihood of sneakerheads embracing this particular drop remains uncertain, regardless of their political affiliations.

As we anticipate the “Official Trump Sneaker Launch Party,” with a date yet to be determined and a caveat that President Trump’s attendance is not guaranteed, the buzz around these sneakers continues. Whether they become a cultural phenomenon or a footnote in the intersection of politics and fashion remains to be seen, but for now, they stand as a unique chapter in the evolving landscape of celebrity-endorsed merchandise.
